plan ahead: FilmEkimi

“Image courtesy of IKSV – the official filmEkimi website”

Make sure you mark down the 13th to the 19th of October as dedicated to the movie fest taking place at the “Emek” movie theatre in Taksim. Most of the movies being shown are excellent silver screen selections. To name a few:
– “Days of glory” by Rachid Bouchareb – awarded Best Actor at the 2006 Cannes festival
– “The wind that shakes the barley” by Ken Loach – awarded Palm d’Or at the 2006 Cannes festival
– “Free Zone” by Amos Gitai – awarded Best Actress to Hanna Laslo at the 2005 Cannes festival
– “Grizzly Man” by Werner Herzog – awarded Best Documentary by the Film Critics Circle

and the list just keeps going on. A lot of the movies that are shown are movies that were awarded at festivals like Sundance and Cannes. You won’t regret it. I hear that if you go watch “Fast-food nation” by Richard Linklater you are guaranteed to never set foot in another fast food restaurant in your life.

Are you mainstream or alternative?

Well, its time to choose now. 2-3 of August Istabul will host the silly named Rock’n Coke festival with some rather big internationl stars like Sisters of Mercy and Placebo. Most importantly they will feature the, at least once upon a time, more than great pop band Mercury Rev.

But the weekend one week earlier my beautiful home vicinity of Sariyer will give you all the Barışa Rock Festival, featuring thirt Turkish band of all sorts during two days. For free. According to what people have told me the two festivals have earlier years been at the same days, to really underline that the Sariyer festival is a counter happening.

What will you choose? Personally I will probably visit the Barışa festival for one day, while not going to Rock’n Coke at all, even if old Mercury Rev really tugs at my soul. Just listen to their old wise words:

holes, dug by little moles
angry jealous spies
got telephones for eyes
come to you as friends
all those endless ends
that can’t be tied

Depeche Mode in Istanbul

Last night, the legendary Depeche Mode gave a great concert in Kurucesme Arena.
The access to the concert was hell but it was worth while.
Cars were parked as far as Arnavutkoy and there was a traffic deadlock at every intersection.
Thank god there is sea access to the open air event hall..
The concert-goers say that this was the best concert Istanbul had seen in the last
few years. Sting was here a couple of weeks ago also but it seems that
Depeche Mode have topped off his performance.

Yesterday’s playlist:

A pain that I’m used to
A question of time
Suffer well
Walking in my shoes
It doesn’t matter two
In your room
John the Revelator
Behind the wheel
World in my eyes
Personal Jesus
Enjoy the Silence
Leave in Silence
Never let me down

My favorites are A pain that I’m used to and Precious.

Airplanes Over The Bosphorus

This morning and into the afternoon I had been hearing and seeing stunt planes flying over the Bosphorus: looping and flying real close to the water. It was cool, but I was wondering what the deal is. I saw it yesterday too.

On Conquest of Istanbul Celebrations…

(The Source)

I have been meaning to write about conquest celebrations since May 29 when is the anniversary date. These celebrations are mostly orchestrated by pro-Islamic parties and municipalities for some time and they could be good cases of kitsch. However, as usual I was lazy to go out and take some photos or make some first-hand observations. Instead, Cengiz Aktar wrote about them today and here is what he says:

It has been 500 or so years since the conquest of Constantinople. As has been the tradition for some time now, there are nonsensical performances and conferences that have nothing to do with any scientific approach. At a time when the ideology of ‘Turkish-Islam synthesis’ is becoming more and more apparent, one can see the passion that dominates the proceedings.blockquote>
