Gray is the colour of middle classes…
While I was gazing at the parking lot of the building I am living in last Sunday afternoon, I have realized that most of the cars had that metallic gray colour. I know, I know it is a bit of a generalization but I would still like to speculate that this gray colour says something about the aesthetics conceptions of Turkish middle classes:)
Does it mean that turkish middle classes want to keep a low profile? Grey may also be one of the colour describing Istanbul… the sea, the marmara marble, the seagul, the city in the winter. Grey could be the upper middle class colour, don’t think istanbuldaki middleclass can afford to have cars…
“Grey could be the upper middle class colour, don’t think istanbuldaki middleclass can afford to have cars…”
I have to think about your other arguments but I cannot accept this one. In fact, i am quiet annoyed with the fact that not only middle classes but all classes of Turks love cars so much! Maybe they cannot afford to have cars but they still have cars….
I’m constantly surprised here in Istanbul over how new and expensive car people are driving. I don’t know or care much about cars, I must admit, but it seems like more people have observed the same thing.
Oe of my working collegues that he in turn was surprised while visiting Finland of how old cars people were driving.
I really get the feeling that a lot of the people here put an enormous part of their money on cars. The gas is even more expensive here than in northern Europe and the income smaller.
I love subways. They day (if ever) the subway reaches whole Istanbul I would never leave this city again.
Of the four cars in my driveway, the latest addition is light gray, my prized 2005 Ford F-150 4×4 with extended cab. Actually our Honda Odyssey is also gray, but a very dark gunmetal gray. I’m such a bragart I know, but they have made it waaay too easy to lease vehicles here in the States. I’ve fallen victim! Gray, in my opinion, looks the best, even when the car is filthy it looks okay. They salt the roads a lot here in New England, and the gray color helps to camouflage the salt as well.
Has nothing to do with classes, not in Turkey nor elsewhere!
Cars with Grey metallic colour can be sold better to second hand buyers than with red, blue, yellow, black or other colours!
